Is Window Tinting Better Than Getting New Windows?

In our blogs, we often talk about the benefits of window tint and how it will save you money on your home’s heating and cooling bills and in Kansas City, where winter is really cold and summer is super hot–that is a very good thing. However, many people come to us at Window Tint Kansas City, with questions regarding applying window tinting on their windows vs just buying new, more technologically advanced windows and wonder if those will do the same exact thing. Our answer is–beyond the just the incredibly high cost of total window replacement (10X as much in some cases) is the fact that window tinting actually does a few things that glass windows simply can’t do and doing and therefore the same effect cannot be achieved with new windows alone. Let us explain why.

How Does Window Tint Work Better Than Glass?

Window film is a micro-thin layer of polyester, metal and sometimes even ceramics that when applied to existing windows has some pretty incredible results, results that cannot be achieved with naked glass. First off this has to do with the reflection from untreated glass vs. glass with film. Single-pane windows have very low solar reflection and absorption only rejecting about 19% of the sun’s heat. With standard tinted windows, on the other hand, these same windows reject 35-45% of the sun’s heat. Better still, windows tinted with energy-saving films reduce heat load by up to 84%. The point here is that even a new window is still just glass and cannot perform to the level of a window treated with energy savings film. Imagine what you could do with 84% of your heating and cooling bills from last year refunded to you?! Not too shabby right?
One further advantage of film over new windows is that new windows alone cannot remedy hot or cold spots, which occur due to imbalances between the sunny and shaded areas of the building. However, solar film minimizes the problem by equalizes the amount of light entering the home. So, in addition to reducing energy use, it also improves the home’s overall comfort level.
